Instructor:

Noah Geraci currently works at the UC Riverside Library as Digital Assets Metadata Librarian, supporting description, management and access to digitized archival collections. Noah has previously worked at the LA Metro Archives and UCLA’s Digital Library Program, and received his MLIS from UCLA.

Workshop description:

This full-day workshop will provide an approachable introduction to the ways that basic programming skills can help you more efficiently tackle common archival tasks. Attendees will come away with new skills and ideas on how to apply them to tasks such as data cleanup and renaming files in bulk, as well as knowledge of resources and strategies for continued learning about coding in an archives context.

Upon completing the course, students will have a basic knowledge of the following:

  • Regular expressions
  • Unix shell
  • Python
  • And how these three useful computing tools can help simplify your work as an archivist!

Students are required to bring their own laptops with a Windows, Mac, or Linux operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have the ability to install software on.

Who should attend:

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in learning how to automate common archival work tasks through utilizing basic programming skills.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants so please register as soon as possible to secure your spot.

Registration open until November 2, 2018.
